Basic pipe52 model

The input to this model can be found in the example folder, under case E001.

A short section of flexible pipe is exposed to:

  • tension

  • external and internal pressure

  • curvature; applied by rotation of the two model ends

Model description

The model, see Figure 1, consist of thermal layers, carcass and zeta spiral that are specified based on the cross sectional area and with no detailed geometry. This is obtained by use of ccode manual in the flexcross description:

Set timeini to a time after the axial load has been applied, but before bending is initiated. In the present case full load is applied from the start, and bending is initiated from time 2. timeini 1.0 will then be the proper choise.
When manual is used for the pressure spirals (carcasss and zeta), postprocessing to the old bflex format and further processing by boundary and pflex can not be performed.

Results

The curvature profile is obtained by glplot from bflex2010post, and shown at maximum curvature in Figure 2.

E001 curvature
Figure 2. Curvature profile
A curvature variation can be observed over the pipe length. One should be careful to keep the model length sufficiently small relative to the tension load, so that the representative curvature is obtained.
